Started to train for the Via 1/2 marathon on September 13, 2009

Monday, July 20th, 2009

I have started to train for the Via 1/2 marathon that is on September 13, 2009. Considering I have just started running in April of this year this is a pretty big effort. I have run a 5K in May and that took me about 30 minutes. Not a great time but at least I finished. That was the longest I have ever run in my life. Today I ran 4 miles at a 10 minute pace. So naturally it took me 40 minutes. Now this is the furthest I have ever run. I felt better at the end of this run than I did when I ran the 5K. Could be because I am in even better shape or because it was in a controlled situation – a treadmill.

I currently weigh 174 as of this morning. At my peak before I decided to start losing weight I was at 188. For the last month I have been lifting weights at least 3x a week pretty hard. As a warmup I was running at least 1 to 1.25 miles at a pretty brisk pace. Well brisk for me :) The first day I started running on June 1 (about) I was running at 6. Now I am running at 7. That is an 8 minute mile. Again, not a great time, but its better than it was a month ago.

My goal is to run 4 miles at least 3x this week.

Happy Father’s Day to me

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

I was finally able to cut the grass after 3 weeks of growing. It has rained a whole late as of late. Everytime I could cut the grass, its raining outside. Even today it wasn’t a great time to cut the grass but I had to do it anyway. The grass was wet from being rained on for days and the soil underneath was muddy.

I let the boys cut the grass with me. Both of them took turns sitting on the tractor and driving around until we eventually cut the grass.

The boys and I watched some TV shows and played baseball outside.

We ended the day by eating dinner together with Frank and Nelly.

Wisdom of a 6 year old

Monday, February 16th, 2009

We went out for Valentine’s Day to the movies then dinner.  While at dinner, my older son Mark Jr. said he needed to play his DS (I had him leave it in the car).  Johnathan said, “Mark you don’t need to play DS.  The only thing you need is a heart, love and your family.”  Sometimes as a parent you question if you are doing the right things.  This gave me a level of affirmation that we must be doing something right.

The attempted chin board break

Saturday, January 24th, 2009

This will help answer the question I always get asked, “is it easy to break a board?”  This is my 2nd attempt at breaking the board with my chin.  I tried a total of 3 times and never broke it.  I decided to quit before my chin broke before the board.  The last one I hit it as hard as I could and all I did was BOUNCE!  OUCH!!!

Ouch!!!

Ouch!!!

Flag football scrimage Vikings vs Eagles

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Last year I was the main coach and Mark Jr.’s flag football team, the Rams, and we went 0-8.  We didn’t lose all the games by much, but we did lose every single one of them.  Turns out midway through the season, the guy that ran the league figured out that my team was misclassified and we should have been in a lower bracket.  Damage was done by that point so it was more about the kids learning and we continued what we were doing.  By the end of that season, a few of the kids did learn a few things about football.  Mark Jr. was getting better a little at a time.

We had a flag football scrimage today against the Eagles.  Mark’s new team is the Vikings.  Due to my bad season last year I decided to be an assistant coach instead this time.  Just in case I was the reason they did so bad.  I didn’t think that was the case but I felt guilty none-the-less.  I asked Tim, the head coach for this team if I could call some plays during the scrimage so he could see what I think would work.  I had a lot of delayed plays.  So a fake double reverse handoff would be one guy running across to take the fake and the other guy that would get the handoff wouldn’t actually move until he counted to 2 or 3.  1st time we did this we ran almost all the way up the field.  Everything we did was delayed.  The guy that was to get the ball would almost always be delayed.  This way he could wait for all the defensive players to start moving, he could see where they were then when he would start moving, he had an idea where he was going to go before he even started.  We did great this time.  I am hoping it transfers to this Saturday’s game.

Mark Jr. got 3 flags, 1 run for no yards and a dropped pass.  He has progressed as a defensive player.  His offense still needs some work.
